During the EAGE meeting 2009 in Amsterdam, several alumni of the Geophysical Institute in Karlsruhe met at the conference evening which took place in an old factory in the port area of Amsterdam. We had many interesting discussions that evening and enjoyed the drinks and food and spoke about the good old times at the Geophysical Institute. At some point, inspired by the return of the GAP meeting to Karlsruhe in 2010 for its 25th anniversary, we came up with the idea for an alumni meeting. While it was really just an interesting thought process at that time, many people have immediately shown great interest for such an event. The EAGE conference in Amsterdam can therefore be seen as the beginning of an initiative to organise an alumni meeting of former members of the Geophysical Institute in Karlsruhe.
The idea has of course somewhat matured over the last couple of months. A rather small but enthusiastic team of alumni, current members of the Geophysical Institute, and students formed which took on the responsibility to organise an alumni meeting in parallel to the GAP meeting. On these web pages, we publish information related to the upcoming events.
An alumni meeting of members and former members of the Geophysical Institute in Karlsruhe, e.g. students, PhD students, scientists, postdocs, professors, and other employees.
The main events will take place on Saturday, 15th of May 2010. There may be optional events on Friday or Sunday dependent on interest. The alumni meeting will take place in parallel to the student meeting GAP.
Most of the events during Saturday will take place on the campus south of the KIT (formerly known as main campus of the Universität Karlsruhe TH). However, there will also be an opportunity to visit the Geophysical Institute at the Westhochschule (Hertzstraße).
We have arranged for a variety of events during Saturday. Please see the programme page for details. There will be plenty of time to meet your former professors, fellow students, and old friends. By the way, we try to arrange for a photographer who's going to make pictures during the entire alumni meeting event.
A registration is required to attend the alumni meeting. Please click here to start the registration process. We kindly ask all alumni to register as early as possible because it makes organising such an event a lot easier.
The registration fee will be about 30 EUR for the entire day and includes a guided tour of the campus (limited number of seats available), a champagne reception, a joint lunch (food and non-alcoholic beverages), coffee/tea and cookies/cakes during the coffee break, food and some drinks during the farewell party, and a copy of the group photo. If unfortunately you can't join us for the reception and lunch but you would like to participate in the other events, then the registration fee will be 15 EUR.
Please visit our transport and accommodation page for details how to get to Karlsruhe in the first place and how to get around in Karlsruhe and on the campus. Furthermore, in case you need accommodation, you can also find some information on hotels close to the campus or in Karlsruhe city on this page.
It is not easy to find and invite all alumni and keep everybody informed about the progress of the organisation. We have therefore established a mailing list called gpi-alumni to distribute the latest information from time to time. Please visit our contact page for further information.
We would also appreciate if you could spread the word and point other alumni to our web site.
