GAP Info: About GAP

The GAP (Geophysical Activity Programme or Geophysikalisches Aktions-Programm) is an international meeting of students of geophysics which is held in Germany or another German-speaking country. It was founded in 1985 with about 100 participants at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. The idea and initiative of the students to present their own institute and to meet each other regularly was highly appreciated. Since 25 years the GAP is organized in different cities on a voluntary basis by students of the host institute. It is financed by participation fees, fundraising and sponsorships. It was originally meant to be a German meeting, but in the meantime students from all over Europe take part in the GAP. So far, the GAP has attracted students from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, France, Great Britain, Norway, Slovakia, Switzerland and The Netherlands. The aim of the GAP is to enable and to intensify contacts within the community of students of geophysics. Scientific lectures are held, field trips and workshops are offered that go beyond the core curriculum of geophysics. Furthermore participants get an insight into the research projects of the host institute. This year the GAP is celebrating its 25th year of existence and it comes back to the place where it was founded. In the past years, the GAP took place at the following universities:
